Namakarana Pooja comprises Naam (name) and Karan (to make). It is a ceremony conducted on the 11th or 21st day after childbirth. It is said that before this, the child is in the impurity phase, hence, it purifies the child and mother together.

The Namkaran Pooja is executed by Pandit Ji where the older people select the baby name. The father of the baby speaks the name in the right ear of his baby.

The necessary samagri used in this puja are roli, mustard seeds, Akshat, Deepak, Kalash, Dhurwa Grass, supari, Laxmi Ganesh Murti, and more to conduct it properly.

When shall we perform Namkaran Pooja?

The Namkarana Pooja is performed on the 11th day or 21st day after the child’s birth, as before this, the time conducting pooja is not considered auspicious. The date is selected by Pandit Ji and is different in each culture.

Importance of Namkarana Pooja after child’s birth

In our Indian Culture, Namakarana Pooja is beneficial in a child’s birth due to the following reasons,
●      The baby’s name is chosen based on its zodiac sign by the older people of the family in the presence of Pandit Ji.
●      The Namkaran Pooja is important to seek the blessings of God.
●      It purifies the child and its mother with the blessings received through Namkaran Puja.
